The inaugural session of the Student Parliament at Weragala Kanishta Vidyalaya, Kegalle, held at the President’s Secretariat, marked a significant milestone in nurturing young leaders. Dignitaries including Dr. Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Education, and Mr. Sagala Ratnayake, Senior Adviser to the President on National Security, graced the occasion, emphasizing the importance of instilling democratic values and parliamentary knowledge among students.

Minister Premajayantha underscored the value of integrating the concept of student parliament into the school curriculum, aiming to foster an understanding of the parliamentary system and democracy among children. Mr. Ratnayake highlighted the role of student parliament in nurturing responsible citizenship and grooming future public representatives.

Mr. Hansa Abeyratne, Acting Secretary General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, emphasized the significance of the student parliament in bolstering democratic principles. Following the election of the Speaker, the Prime Minister, Ministers, and Members of Parliament were sworn in, marking the commencement of the inaugural session.

In recognition of their participation, student parliament members received certificates, and with the support of the Bank of Ceylon Parliamentary Branch, accounts were opened for 37 students, demonstrating a commitment to their educational advancement. Additionally, donations including a loudspeaker were made to the school, further enhancing its resources.

The event also saw the exchange of tokens of appreciation, with Weragala Kanishta Vidyalaya, Kegalle presenting a commemorative plaque to the Communication Department of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and to the esteemed guests in attendance. This landmark occasion signifies a pivotal step towards nurturing future leaders and fostering a culture of civic engagement among the youth.
