Tragedy at Fox Hill: Racers Detained After Fatal Crash, Investigation Underway

Two racing car drivers who participated in the '28th Fox Hill Super Cross – 2024' races in Diyatalawa have been arrested and remanded until April 30 following a tragic accident on Sunday, as reported by Diyatalawa Police. The drivers, aged 36 and 47 and hailing from Matara and Peradeniya respectively, raced under the numbers 5 and 196. The accident, which occurred during the 17th race of the day, claimed the lives of seven individuals, including an eight-year-old girl, and left over 20 others hospitalized.

Among the injured were the two arrested drivers, who were apprehended while receiving treatment at Diyatalawa Base Hospital. The deceased, including track officials, were identified from various areas across the country.

Further investigations into the incident are being carried out by Diyatalawa Police, alongside separate inquiries by two Police groups under the supervision of Superintendents of Police in the Bandarawela Division. The Sri Lanka Army is also conducting an internal investigation, led by a seven-member team appointed by the Commander of Security Forces Headquarters (Central).

The tragic accident occurred during the second lap of the 1500cc Ford Laser Mazda 323 category race, organized by the Sri Lanka Military Academy in collaboration with Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS).
